FLAG PROJECT

The third-graders at Northville Central School in Rebecca Pratt’s and Wendy Sweet’s class just completed a unit on flags. They began by talking about types of flags, where they see them, and naming ones they know. They discovered that they all have colors and can have symbols. Flags basically tell a story. They then dove deeper and studied our American Flag, better known as “Old Glory.”

Upon completion of the learning about our country’s flag, each student then created their own personal flag. They began with sketching their ideas, making sure to have colors and symbols. Afterwards they wrote about the meaning of their flag and typed their final essay. The last stage was drawing their

images, cutting them on paper, and pinning them to felt. The pieces were then cut out. Each student sewed by hand their symbols and presented their final product to the class, which was the flag.
