Sira honored

JOHNSTOWN — Fulton County Court Judge and Surrogate Louise Sira — who passed away Oct. 1 — was honored through a county Board of Supervisors resolution passed Tuesday at the County Office Building.

The resolution passed with a silent, standing second.

It conveyed the board’s “expression of deepest sympathy” to Sira’s entire family, including husband John, sons John and Wyatt, stepson Jeremiah, father, mother, sisters, brother, niece and nephews.

Gloversville 6th Ward Supervisor Warren Greene, board chairman, told his colleagues it was his “honor” to work with Sira during his tenure as director of the county Probation Department and chairman of the Fulton County Traffic Safety Board.

“The people of Fulton County were saddened by the loss of a good friend, mentor and benefactor in public service,” the resolution read. “Ms. Sira was a dedicated jurist, serving as Fulton County judge and surrogate from 2016 through 2018.”

The resolution noted Sira served as Fulton County district attorney from Jan. 1, 2002 to Dec. 31, 2015. She led important initiatives including the Violent Crime and Drug Task Force, Domestic Violence Task Force and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

“During her career progression from assistant district attorney to first assistant district attorney, to district attorney and county judge, Louise distinguished herself as a hardworking and dedicated public servant, at all times committed to the best interest of the county of Fulton,” the resolution said. “Those who worked with or around her knew her as an affable colleague and friend.”

Sira was recognized with the Soroptimist International Fulton County Award, New York Senate Women of Distinction Award, Ruth Voorhees Award, Drug Court Recognition Award, and 2011 Prosecutor of the Year honor by the New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud.

Her volunteerism in the community included memberships on the HFM Prevention Council, Citizens in Community Service, and the Fulton County Traffic Safety Board.
