Drive-thru trick or treating event planned
AMSTERDAM — Parents and trick or treaters shouldn’t freight the invisible monster, also known as COVID-19, this Halloween, as they will have the option to trick or treat while remaining in their cars.
The city of Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing and Recreation Department, is hosting a Drive-thru Trick or Treat event, sponsored by the MCT Federal Credit Union.
The drive-thru event will be held on Halloween at 1 p.m. at the Veteran’s Park parking lot on Locust Avenue. The city has 2,000 treat bags available for children 12 years old and under. The children must be present to receive a treat bag.
If parents do decide take their children Trick or Treating the traditional route — by foot — the Amsterdam Police Department asks parents and trick or treaters to only visit participating houses that will have an outside light on Halloween night from 6 to 8 p.m., and to do so safely, respectfully and to follow COVID-19 guidelines.
According to the release, trick or treaters should wear a face mask, and cloth masks should be worn under their costume mask; keep six feet apart; and sanitize hands in between stops.
Those handing out candy are recommended to wear gloves and to hand out the candy instead of letting the trick or treaters reach into the candy bowl.
Guidelines also recommend parents wipe down candy packets when finished trick or treating or let them sit for a couple days before opening.
The Amsterdam Police Department will also have extra patrols on duty the entire Halloween weekend.
