Driver charged in crash that killed trooper

FONDA — On Friday, State Police in Fonda, in consultation with the Montgomery County District Attorney Kelli P. McCoski, arrested 34-year-old Aaron M. Munise of Johnstown, for criminally negligent homicide, a class E felony and reckless driving, a misdemeanor. The charges are the result of a sealed indictment passed up in Montgomery County Court.

Munise was arraigned in Montgomery County Court and remanded to Montgomery County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.
 On Nov. 27, 2018, at approximately 7:45 a.m., Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand was reporting to work at the State Police barracks in Fonda when he was involved in a motor vehicle crash.

VanNostrand was stopped in the westbound lane of State Highway 5S waiting to turn into the station in his personal vehicle, when he was rear-ended by a box truck driven by Aaron M. Munise of Johnstown, and pushed into oncoming traffic. His vehicle was then hit by a pick-up truck traveling eastbound.

VanNostrand was transported to Albany Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
