2 housing authorities get grants
GLOVERSVILLE — Two local housing agencies will receive a portion of the more than $200,000 in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding recently awarded to public housing authorities in the 21st Congressional District.
U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik this week announced CARES ACT funding awards would be distributed to six housing agencies located in her district through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to support the Housing Choice Voucher program.
“This funding will help our communities respond to constituent needs and will support the Housing Choice Voucher program that has proven successful in the past,” said Stefanik in a prepared statement.
Locally, the Gloversville Housing Authority will receive $34,143 and the Dolgeville Housing Authority will receive $2,306.
Other awards include $31,880 to the Plattsburgh Housing Authority, $157,154 to the Glens Falls Housing Authority, $17,973 to the Harrietstown Housing Authority and $5,684 to the town of Wilton.
The HUD Housing Choice Voucher program allows low-income families to choose privately-owned rental housing that is safe, decent and affordable. The CARES Act funding is intended to provide public housing authorities and entities administering the voucher program the flexibility to prepare for, prevent and respond to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
“As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our communities are facing significant need when it comes to public housing programs. I look forward to witnessing the positive impact this funding will have on our North Country communities and families, and I will continue to advocate for these important programs,” stated Stefanik.
Both the Gloversville and Dolgeville Housing Authorities previously received CARES ACT funding to support the Housing Choice Voucher program in May when approximately $42 million in funds were distributed to public housing authorities across the state.
The Gloversville Housing Authority was previously awarded $27,746 and the Dolgeville Housing Authority was awarded $1,952 through the earlier CARES Act funding allocation.
