4 teens charged in graffiti incident

Painted offensive material on overpass in city

AMSTERDAM — Four juveniles were identified as the alleged suspects in the investigation in an incident that involved offensive graffiti being sprayed on an overpass in the city’s southside in the area of lower Daniel Street and Florida Avenue.

According to a news release, two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds were interviewed as part of the investigation in which they made confessions to allegedly making the graffiti.

Amsterdam police conducted a neighborhood canvass that showed the graffiti appeared sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The paint cans used were recovered by police as well as digital evidence of the alleged crime shown on one of the juvenile’s phones.

According to the release, on Wednesday, one of the juveniles had also used social media including Facebook to like a press release on the investigation that was posted on Facebook by the Amsterdam Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing, and all four juveniles will be referred to Montgomery County Probation for purposes of processing and restitution at a later date due to the Government shutdown that is in place because of the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

Amsterdam Police Department thanks the public for their tips that assisted police in identifying the four suspects.
