Man commits suicide after police standoff

MAYFIELD — A man committed suicide by gunshot in the parking lot of the Mayfield Stewart’s Shop Saturday night following a standoff with police, according to Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino.

A stolen vehicle was pulled over by a Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy Saturday during which the subject, who was armed with a shotgun, engaged officers in a 30-minute standoff before ultimately committing suicide with the firearm. According to Giardino, the subject was wanted for burglary and theft of a shotgun.

Fulton County Sheriff’s were assisted on scene by the New York State Police, the Mayfield Fire Department, and the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Fulton County Coroner Margaret Luck, Assistant Coroner Sherry Brown and Emergency Services Coordinator Steve Santa Maria also responded to the scene.
