8-year-old attacked by pit bull

AMSTERDAM — An 8-year-old boy has been hospitalized after he was bitten by his family dog in the city on Wednesday according to city police.

Police said the boy was in the fenced-in backyard with the dog at 61 Chapel Place around 5 p.m. when the dog bit his neck. The bite was severe.

The boy’s mother, Jasmine Tirado, 27, attempted to free the boy from the dog’s grasp and was bit in the shoulder and the tip of her pinky finger as well.

The child was airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The boy was conscious during the transport according to police. The mother was additionally taken to the hospital for her wounds.

Police say they currently have no update on the boy’s condition, but are hoping to get one today, since they are thinking about him and his well being.

The dog is currently in a cage on the property where it will remain for a minimum 10-day hold. The dog will likely be put down after the hold is up.

Officers said it is unclear why the dog attacked the boy. The mother told police the family had owned the dog for four years, since it was a puppy.
