Tree lighting, Santa event set for today

AMSTERDAM — The city of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing and Recreation Department will present Amsterdam’s tree lighting festival, sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Physicians Health Care, starting at 4 p.m. today on the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook Bridge, according to a news release.

The free family event will include holiday music with Ryan Nilsen; giveaways with MVP Health Care; Christmas tea table, sponsored by Sticker Mule; make Christmas ornaments, sponsored by Berkshire Farms; pictures on Santa’s sleigh with live reindeer; Christmas goodies served by Amsterdam cheerleaders; free horse-drawn carriage rides through the south side; and caroling with Mohawk Valley Chorus. The tree lighting will take place at 4:30 p.m. and at 4:45 p.m. Santa will be arriving on the MVGO Bridge.

Also, Santa dropped his mail box off at the Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook. Bring letters to Santa’s Mail Box with all Christmas wishes, along with the return address and Santa will be sending a letter in return.
