‘Equality and Ice Cream’ scheduled
JOHNSTOWN — “Equality and Ice Cream” will be the theme of the documentary “Legalize Equality” by Kamila Lopez on Sept. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Johnstown Area Community Center, sponsored by the Women Democrats Organization.
Sundaes will also be served to honor the #iscream4equality campaign going on now in Virginia until Nov. 4. That campaign hopes to turn a seat in the that state’s senate and allow Virginia to be the 38th and final state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Lopez’s 30-minute film will be followed by a 10-minute video that details the history of the amendment. The ERA is a 24-word statement introduced to Congress in 1923 by Alice Paul: “Equality of right under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by a state on account of sex.”
The Women Democrats are a member of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Womens’ Consortium, and this program is one of others this year celebrating the upcoming 100-year anniversary of women in the United States gaining the right to vote in 1920.
Jennifer Garren is the chairwoman of the Sept. 12 program.
