Service to honor former pastor set

AMSTERDAM — The community is invited to a celebration of the Rev. Dan Wheeler, former pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, on Sunday, with worship at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon in his honor.

Wheeler will be named pastor emeritus to honor the 20 years of service he provided to the congregation and the community in Amsterdam. In retirement, Wheeler is serving Bethany Presbyterian Church in Menands.

Wheeler began his service in Amsterdam at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. In 1995 Emmanuel Presbyterian Church and Second Presbyterian Church merged to form the United Presbyterian Church of Amsterdam.

He was preparing to retire when the church was destroyed by fire in January 2000. He remained in his role through the aftermath and reconstruction of the new building on the site at 25 Church St. He retired in 2004.

Wheeler is known for his storytelling. “Lessons from the Puckerbrush” was published in 2014. It recounts stories from his life and his call to the ministry.

Area residents who were touched by his ministry are invited to attend both the worship service and the luncheon to celebrate his work. Members of his current congregation will join him for the celebration. Updates will be published on the church’s Facebook page.
