Latex paint exchange runs through Aug. 28
JOHNSTOWN — The Fulton County Department of Solid Waste will once again sponsor the free latex paint exchange from 7:15 to 11:30 a.m. every Saturday. The program began on June 5, and runs until Aug. 28, at the FCDSW, 847 Mud Road, according to a news release.
The Fulton County residents can drop off cans of good, re-useable latex paint, or take up to five gallons weekly, all at no cost. There are approximately 60 gallons presently to give away.
The cans of donated latex paint should be at least half-full, in good condition, with legible labels and free of lumps. This paint is opened and checked, and if good, will be given back out to the public.
The residents with cans of bad latex paint (paint that is hardened, too thick to use, or that has been frozen) are advised to dry out the paint and dispose of it with their regular garbage, according to Dianne Woske, recycling coordinator.
To dispose of cans of paint in the garbage, the paint must be completely hardened. Latex paint dries quickly if it is left with the lid off for a few weeks, or mix in kitty litter, sand or sawdust to absorb liquid, and let it dry out. Solidified cans of paint should be disposed of in regular garbage, but leave the lid clearly off, so garbage collection crews can be sure they are not picking up liquid paint.
The oil paint and stains, varnishes and lacquers should be disposed of at the household hazardous waste drop off on Aug. 7, at the DSW. The Fulton County residents must register for an appointment.
