BROADALBIN — In keeping with the district’s storied tradition of a robust Odyssey of the Mind program, two of the four B-P teams that participated in the COVID-altered season have earned their way into this year’s World Finals competition. The Division II team (grades 6-8) will compete virtually, with the Division III team (grades 9-12) traveling to Orlando, Fla., to compete in person June 11 and 12.

B-P’s Division II team is coached by Caitlin Walter and includes sixth-graders Jackson Sargalis, Camden Korona, Austin Steele, Samantha Sniezyk, Kelsey Walter, and Taylor Gifford.

The Division III team traveling to Florida is coached by Alison and Carl Aery and includes students Rylee VanAlstine, Blaine Herrick, Lauryn Donahue, Jacob Hughes, Logan Aery and Ryan Michalski.

“These students work hard every season, but we are particularly proud of their successes this year,” said Tammy Staie, B-P’s Odyssey of the Mind co-coordinator. “Much of their planning, building and rehearsing has been done over virtual team meetings, with remote competitions at both the regional and state levels. The goal is always to make it to worlds and they are so excited to finally be going.”

To help offset the costs of the upcoming trip, the Division III team will conduct a district-wide coin drive May 17 through 21. B-P students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to donate their spare change all week, with each pre-K through grade 12 homeroom participating. The three elementary homerooms that raise the most money for Odyssey of the Mind will win an ice cream sundae party and the top homeroom class at the junior/senior high school will win “make your own sundae” coupons from Stewart’s Shops.

Three local restaurants have also stepped up to help the team raise funds, donating a percentage of their proceeds to the OOTM team during specific time periods on specific dates. A printed flyer or an electronic version of the flyer on a mobile phone or tablet must be presented when ordering at each restaurant.
