Exploring the impact of COVID in the Adirondacks
SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Southern Adirondack Library System is exploring how the COVID-19 has impacted people’s daily lives through the Leaving our Fingerprints on History project, a crowd-sourced, first-person account of history. The project began in April 2020, and the new Leaving our Fingerprints on History website at: https://fingerprints.sals.edu/ shares stories from hundreds of people in the region and beyond, about how their life has changed since the pandemic began, according to a news release.
Initially designed to build community while people were sheltering in place, the project has grown to include library systems across the state, including the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, Finger Lakes Library System, Northern New York Library System, and the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Library System.
“We began focusing on our friends and neighbors,” explained Erica Freudenberger, the Outreach and Engagement consultant at the Southern Adirondack Library System. “But we received submissions from people across the state, then across the country, and even across the world, including Canada, England, and India.”
Since launching the survey, the pandemic has continued to evolve, and impact people’s lives. People who contributed stories early on are encouraged to return to the survey to share their current experiences.
“More than 200 people have shared their stories so far,” said Jack Scott, the Tech and Youth Services librarian at the Southern Adirondack Library System. “We’ve been blown away by the honesty, vulnerability, joy, and pain people have experienced.”
