4-H members join to celebrate foreign cultures
JOHNSTOWN — Youth and families in 4-H from throughout Fulton and Montgomery counties came together on Jan. 24 at the Shirley Luck Senior Citizen Center to share what they learned about their chosen country and celebrate foreign cultures.
Eight 4-H clubs and individuals presented an educational display, made a culturally significant dish to share, and gave a presentation on their chosen countries. All did an outstanding job. The countries represented this year were, as follows: Canada — Mohawk Valley Midnight Riders 4-H Club. Chile — Four Seasons 4-H Club. China — Ailene Donovan. France — Rusty Bits 4-H Club. Germany — Udderly Amazing Dairy 4-H Club. Ireland — Shannon Dening. Kiribati — Community Gals and Guys 4-H Club. Spain — Four Seasons 4-H Club.
In addition to the country displays, youth were able to participate in the “Find Me On The Map!” activity where they used coordinates and clues to locate countries on the world map. Youth were also able to travel around the country displays and have their passports signed at each country they visited.
A portion of the evening was devoted to a guest speaker. This year it was Brandy Johns, a coordinator for Global Friendships student exchange program. She coordinates student exchanges with multiple countries and works with host families within Fulton and Montgomery counties. Jones spoke about the many things to consider while hosting a foreign exchange student and how to understand cultural differences.
