Dancer awarded scholarship

JOHNSTOWN — Willa Perkins, a Johnstown High School sophomore, has been awarded a $500 performing arts scholarship as an advanced dancer at Highlights Performing Arts.

Kimberly Bartlett, Highlights director, and Meghan Bartlett, Highlights instructor, gave the scholarship to Perkins for her outstanding dedication and leadership in performance, according to a news release.

Perkins has been a student with Highlights Performing Arts for 11 years, where she studies dance and gymnastics and assists with teaching the younger students.

Besides performing in two recitals each year, she has competed both locally and out of state, achieving many platinum awards as a soloist and part of the Highlights’ team in group routines. This year, she was chosen as ambassador to represent her team at the national competition in Manchester, N.H.

She has also attended classes at the American Academy of Ballet and the Step Up 2 Dance convention. As a high school student, she has been named to the honor roll. She excels in English, Spanish, advanced math and physical education. She also plays the flute in the high school band.
