CAROGA — Onetime dancer Bonnie Buchner, 98, of Caroga Lake recently traveled to New York City to see “Hello, Dolly!” on Broadway. The showed starred Donna Murphy, who was taking over for Bette Midler.

Since Murphy is a former student of Buchner’s daughter, Sherry Kenney of Georgetown, Mass., Buchner was able to visit with her after the show.

Buchner was accompanied by her two daughters, Bonnie Baswell of Colorado Springs and Kenney, as well as her niece, Karen Baswell of New York City.

At the age of 17, Buchner tried out for the New York City Rockettes. She passed the audition and was asked to come back when she was 18. Instead, she finished her four-year college degree at Cortland, married Navy commander Ronald Buchner of Johnstown, and had four children. She taught and was director of guidance at several area schools.

Buchner can be seen on YouTube: Bonnie Buchner, when at age 90 she danced for the Paula Abdul “Live to Dance Show.”
