Gospel Fest planned
AMSTERDAM — The Mohawk Valley Chorus is preparing for its upcoming season. The registration is now open for MVC’s first gospel fest, a day-long gospel workshop open to high school and adult singers. MVC is also looking for youths and adults to join them for their 2018-2019 concert season. The workshop fee is $30 — advance registration is required, according to a news release.
The following is the gospel fest information:
∫ Oct. 20: The MVC’s gospel fest will be held at Johnstown High School. The Rev. Dr. Raymond Wise, director of the African-American Arts Institute at Indiana University, will conduct the workshop. The singers of all faiths, religions and spiritual traditions can participate.
∫ The participants will learn and refine gospel songs, spirituals, and anthems, and develop vocal techniques for singing in the gospel style. The day will conclude with an informal performance of five to six selections.
∫ The workshop will start at 9 a.m. (sign-in opens at 8 a.m.) with a mid-day lunch break and late afternoon rest and snack break; lunch and snacks will be provided.
∫ At 5 p.m., participants will perform a 30-minute informal concert at the high school. There is no charge to attend the concert.
The deadline to register is Sept. 30. The registration forms can be obtained at MVC’s Facebook page or by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.

The MVC’s performing groups: Mohawk Valley Chorus, the MVC Kids Chorus, the Mohawk Valley Chamber Ensemble and the MVC Youth Chorale are welcoming new members for its 2018-19 season.
The first adult choir rehearsal is Sept. 10 at the Horace J. Inman Senior Center, 53 Guy Park Ave. The registration begins at 7 p.m., followed by rehearsal at its regular time, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday. No auditions are required. Interested singers can attend the first two rehearsals without making a commitment to join. The annual dues for the adult choir are $50 and should be paid by the close of the second rehearsal.
The following will rehearse and perform in the annual Christmas concert series from Nov. 30, to Dec. 2.
The chorus, under the direction of David M. Rossi, with accompanist Bradley Gregg, will rehearse for its annual Christmas concert series. In 2019, there will be a classics concert on March 10, and the season will conclude with the pops concert series in May. For more information, contact Cathy Roberts at (518) 573-7799 or firstname.lastname@example.org, the news release stated.
The MVC Kids Chorus, directed by Theresa Jackson, is looking for singers ages 6 and up. No auditions are necessary. MVC Kids provides children with opportunities for musical learning, performing and making new friends. Amanda Grab accompanies the group. The rehearsals start Sept. 14, and are held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the United Presbyterian Church, Amsterdam. The MVC Kids will perform at the annual Christmas concert series among other events. Interested parents-guardians should contact Jackson at (518) 281-1437, or at email@example.com.
The Mohawk Valley Chamber Ensemble (MVCE) seeks middle school and high school students who want to learn and share in the chamber ensemble experience. The fall session will feature small ensemble groups, which will be determined after registration. Student musicians will be grouped appropriately by musicianship skills. A professional musician will coach each ensemble to develop and refine musicianship skills in the areas of ensemble, blend, balance, intonation and performance skills.
Possible ensembles include saxophone, clarinet, woodwind quintet, brass and flute. MVCE is also looking to create a rhythm combo with drum set, bass guitar, guitar and piano, to accompany small ensembles.
The rehearsals, which start Sept. 15, are held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Amsterdam. MVCE will perform at the MVC Christmas concert series among other events.
Interested students should call or text MVCE director Stephanie Boice at (518) 331-7436 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
