Century Club names winners
AMSTERDAM — The Century Club has announced award winners. They include:
∫ Sarah Anne Subik, the daughter of Gretchen and Clark Subik, was the recipient of the 2017 S. Louise Bell award of $1,000. Subik was second in the class at Fonda-Fultonville Central School with a 97.7 average. She will enter Union College in the fall to pursue a major in engineering and business, and has 31 college credits from Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
She was vice president of the class of 2017 and a student representative on the Fonda-Fultonville school board. Subik played varsity soccer and basketball and was a member of the All County Band and Yearbook committee. She also has been a 4-H member, coach, counselor and referee for youth basketball and a member of the Fonda Reformed youth group.
∫ Emily Vargus, the daughter of Maria and Jorge Martinez, was the recipient of the First Generation award of $1,000. Vargus ranks 63 out of 222 in the class at Amsterdam High School with a grade-point average of 89.9. She will be entering Russell Sage College in the fall with 30 college credits from FMCC and will be majoring in health sciences. She is fluent in Spanish and has basic knowledge of sign language. She is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator, and is proficient in Microsoft, Google drive, blackboard, Goggle classroom and PowerPoint.
During the time at AHS, Vargus participated in cross country track and field, leadership partnership, the science and technology entry program, and Medical Explorers at St. Mary’s Hospital. She worked at the New York State Children’s Foundation and Bacon Day Camp. She was a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps member and a counselor for Perth Bible Camp.
