ALBANY — Hannaford Supermarkets announced a $45,000 donation to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York as part of its annual Hannaford Helps program, according to a news release.

The donation coincides with a critical time of need for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, which traditionally experiences a significant decrease in donations following the generosity of the holiday season.

The donation follows a recent food drive hosted by Siena Athletics in partnership with Hannaford, during which 1,150 pounds of non-perishable items were collected for the food bank. The food drive was held during the Siena men’s basketball game at the Times Union Center against Saint Peter’s on Jan. 7.

“Hannaford is committed to fighting hunger locally. Our Hannaford Helps program is designed to support important organizations within our community, and we cannot think of a more fitting example than the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York,” said Hannaford Supermarkets Community Relations Specialist Brian Fabre in the release. “We hope this donation will help to replenish the Food Bank’s supply and enable it to provide for families well into the New Year.”

The donation will support the overall mission of the food bank to fight hunger in the community. The food bank collects donated food from the food industry and distributes it to nearly 1,000 charitable agencies feeding the hungry in 23 counties of northeastern New York. The food provided by the Regional Food Bank helps to feed more than 40,000 people each week.

“We thank Hannaford Supermarkets for these donations, and are grateful for their partnership throughout the year to assist the Food Bank and the hungry people we serve,” said Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York Executive Director Mark Quandt in the release. “We would also like to thank Siena fans for their generosity at the recent food drive and support of the Food Bank.”

Hannaford Helps programs of Hannaford Supermarkets and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation donate more than $4 million annually to community organizations, with an emphasis on hunger relief; health and wellness; and education and child development.
