Gibson receives AAUW award

MAYFIELD – Jahnn Gibson was honored as the Unsung Hero of the Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown branch of the American Association of University Women at a recent meeting at the Mayfield Yacht Club, a news release said.

Gibson became an active member in the branch soon after she joined in 2010 by distributing member name tags at meetings. Over the past five years, she has organized meetings on blind awareness, global warming, summer planning and the June potluck.

She is a member of the Lunch Bunch Book Club. She oversaw the student hat models for the AAUW Celebration scholarship fundraiser and served as secretary pro-tem when the secretary was unavailable, the news release said. Most recently, she stepped up to head the AAUW High School Literary Award committee, setting the essay topic, organizing readers and presenting the awards at Amsterdam this June.

The Unsung Hero award was originated by past branch President Helen Martin to acknowledge the behind-the-scenes efforts of local branch members who have not received the Emerging Leader Award but have contributed to the mission of AAUW. Past recipients include Susan Summerfield, Gloria Kimball, Carol Cownie, Bonnie Van Wie and Helen James.
