Luck senior center decorations to go up

JOHNSTOWN — The following is for the Shirley J. Luck Senior Center, 109 E. Main St.

At noon Wednesday will be a get together as a group to decorate the center for the holidays. There will be a free luncheon served by the center and there will be tasks for everyone to come out and participate. The participants can also bring an ornament from home in honor of a loved one to place on our tree.

The center has a box for toys and gifts that will go to children in local communities through the Salvation Army. The center is hoping many will bring in a toy or two to make a child in our local area smile on Christmas morning. A donation to the local food pantry is always welcome, especially this time of year. There is a box to drop off food items which will be delivered to the food pantry. Items are being collected for the James A. Brennan Humane Society, so remember to pick up a toy, food, or any other pet item and drop them in the box.

At 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, the 50 Plus Club will be hosting another game of cornhole. No cost to enter. This event is becoming so popular the club plans to make this a recurring monthly event in 2020.

The center recently had three cancellations on its Rockettes trip planned for Dec. 12. The cost is $140 for members and $145 for non-members. If interested, don’t hesitate to contact the center as it is expected the seats will fill quickly.

The center, which has a trip planned for September 2020 to the Pacific Northwest, has brochures with the full eight day itinerary. The signup for this trip will continue until March 13. If this sounds like something of interest, call or stop by the business office to request a brochure.

The membership drive continues. Signup or renew a membership by Dec. 31, to be entered in a drawing to win $50. The membership is $15 for the year regardless of one’s address. Those who become a member, not only are supporting the senior center and 50 Plus Club, but also have the benefit of saving money on classes, trips, and some events.

The center staff reminder: As winter approaches, the center may close due to weather. In the event of inclement weather, listen to radio station WENT 1340 am or call the office to see if the center is canceling any events, classes or programs. As always, if anyone is not comfortable coming out, use the best judgment and stay safe.

Many of the class participants have been inquiring about the status of the yoga, chair yoga and Tai Chi classes.

The center:

∫ Has retained the class lists from each class.

∫ When there is a new instructor, the business office staff will call each one to notify of the new start date.

∫ Anticipates the pricing to remain the same and assures they are looking to fill the positions with certified instructors as quickly as possible. We will announce it in The Eavesdropper newsletter and in this column of the Senior Focus.

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday:

∫ On Tuesday chair caning will not be held.

∫ On Wednesday the knitting and crochet class will not be in session.

∫ On Thursday and Friday the senior center will be closed.

For more information about classes, events and activities, stop by the center or call (518) 762-4643. The center has books and magazines available in the lobby along with general information including services that may be helpful to seniors, who can stay current with all the happenings at the Johnstown Senior Center. The center’s monthly newsletter, “The Eavesdropper” is available free in the center lobby, at most local churches, senior living common rooms, via e-mail or mail (postage cost does apply) and also the 50 Plus Club on Facebook.
