Chicken picnic set for Wednesday

FONDA — The Glen-Mohawk Seniors regular meeting on Tuesday, was called to order by President Joe Mancini. The opening prayer was given by Chaplain Allan Taylor followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing “America the Beautiful” with Barbara Furman at the piano. The roll call was taken by Vice President Gloria Kimball with 24 members and one guest present.

Ruth Burke took the meeting minutes of June 25, which were approved.

Olive Taylor gave the treasurer’s report and it was saved for audit. Phyllis Smith, corresponding secretary, had a sympathy card for the family of a deceased member.

Lu Wilmot gave an update on the barbecue chicken picnic set for Wednesday at Kateri Tekawitha Shrine. There are 41 who have signed up and several orders taken for additional chicken halves. There will be a white elephant sale with the proceeds used for bingo prizes that day.

Wilmot will take signups for the Aug. 22, Chatham based Mac-Haydn Theatre performance of “Oklahoma” with the meal at Yanni’s Restaurant at the next meeting. The price for non-members is $62 and the bus will leave Fonda at 10:15 a.m.

The Maine Coast trip will be Sept. 9 to 13. There are about 30 signed up for this trip and the final payment date has been extended another week. The non-member price is $479. For more information and reservations, call Wilmot at (518) 853-3906.

Kimball had 14 participants for the Senior Health Improvement and Nutrition Education program which followed the meeting. She read Montgomery County Office for the Aging announcement about Farmer’s Market coupons and the annual picnic on Sept. 13, at the Fonda Fairgrounds.

The Shirley J. Luck Senior Center in Johnstown has defensive driving classes scheduled for August and September, in case anyone couldn’t attend the ones Alan Buck has arranged for today and July 15, where 25 have signed up and the maximum class size is 30.

Phyllis Smith announced the Glen Volunteer Fire Department will have an ice cream social from 6 to 8 p.m. July 23. Mancini read a flyer from the Fonda Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 942 advertising their car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. There is a $10 auto registration fee and all kinds of vehicles will be on display. Food and beverages will be available on the grounds.

Today donations were for the food pantry.

Mary Fox conducted the prize drawing with the help of Furman. The winners were Lu Wilmot and Allan Taylor.

The meeting adjourned. Allan Taylor gave the closing prayer.

The next regular meeting will be on July 16, at the Fonda Reformed Church hall. The social hour begins at 9 a.m. and the meeting starts at 10:30. Glen Mohawk Seniors is open to anyone who has reached the age of 55 or older.
