94th Birthday for Joseph Hanchar
Joseph Hanchar, a lifelong resident of Johnstown, recently had a 94th birthday celebration at home on East Decker Street, which he built over 60 years ago. Deborah Hanchar of Great Falls, Va., Joseph Hanchar’s daughter, hosted the celebration, with 27 friends and extended family representing all walks-of life, reminisced with Joe Hanchar. Those who came to partake in the festivities were nephews, neighbors, former and current caregivers, one of Joe Hanchar’s employees from the 1960s and a former co-builder.
Joe Hanchar is a retired self-employed painting contractor, and World War II veteran who had the honor of serving as the 2017 Johnstown Memorial Day parade grand marshall. Besides the World War II buddies he keeps in contact with via Deborah Hanchar, he continues to enjoy the camaraderie of those at the Shirley J. Luck Senior Center daycare and weekly pitch games. He is visited by local friends and neighbors and is cared for by a 24-seven team of caregivers.
Joe Hanchar still follows football and baseball games on TV and enjoys old movies and TV shows. He keeps in shape with the help of outdoor walks, indoor stationary bike riding and exercising.
The birthday celebration was also a remembrance of Joe Hanchar’s wife of 65 years, Dorothy Sweeney, also of Johnstown, who passed away in December 2014.
