ATF investigators are present outside 36 Helwig Street in Gloversville Wednesday, April 17, 2024 after a reported explosion early in the morning that shook the multi-family residence and could be heard throughout the neighborhood.

GLOVERSVILLE — One of the tenants of a home in the Gloversville neighborhood where a pair of explosive detonated early Wednesday morning said he’s still a bit shaken by the ordeal but not as much as he was Wednesday.

Meanwhile, police officials declined to provide further details on where the investigation stands regarding incident on Helwig Street which occurred in the early morning hours.

Gloversville Police Capt. Bradley Schaffer said in a press release Thursday that, after discussions with multiple agencies involved in the investigation including the FBI and ATF, “no additional significant information will be released at this time.”

“I want to stress that our agency is committed to doing everything possible to bring this case to a favorable resolution by arresting, and aiding in the successful prosecution of, those responsible for these acts,” Schaffer said. “We are devoting all available resources to accomplishing this goal.”

Several wooden beams have been placed where one side of the porch once was at 36 Helwig St. That portion of the porch was destroyed when an “improvised explosive device” went off on the porch.

Police said it responded around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday to the area of Helwig Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues for the report of two explosions. Police said it found two separate scenes with evidence of a detonation of “improvised explosive devices.”

The residence at 36 Helwig is owned by Colin Tyndall, according to the final 2023 assessment roll. Tyndall lists a Schenectady address on the roll documentation.

Tenant Dennis Collins was home during the time of the explosion. He heard the loud explosion that jarred the building.

He soon discovered damage to his porch railing and front window, he said Wednesday. He said Thursday that police had provided no update to him.

Mayor Vincent DeSantis said Wednesday there was only property damage from the two explosions, which he also noted hearing.

DeSantis said he could not comment further on the matter Thursday.
