AMSTERDAM — Issues with a pump motor serving the pool at Wilbur H. Lynch Middle School ended the seasonal Family Swim Program.

The mechanical issue led to the cancellation last week of the program hosted by the city and school district every Thursday night this winter.

Greater Amsterdam Superintendent Richard Ruberti said the motor had to be sent out for repair or replacement following a service call.

The program launched in November was originally expected to conclude for the season in February, but was extended into March due to its popularity.

Rob Spagnola, director of the city’s Tourism, Marketing and Recreation Department, said the season was due to end before the maintenance issue could be resolved.

“This was the last week anyway,” Spagnola said Tuesday.

Amsterdam partnered with the school district on the program reopening the pool for public use for the first time in three years. The Montgomery County Public Health Department sponsored the free activity.

The weekly swim night featured an hour each of open swimming, water aerobics and lap swimming. Spagnola said the program was well attended and added to the recreation options available locally during the winter.

“We’re certainly appreciative of the school district working with us and allowing us to do that,” Spagnola said. “The community is really lucky to have the school be so cooperative.”

The pool at Lynch is expected to reopen for regular school use sometime soon, Ruberti said.

Officials are eager to continue the Family Swim Program next winter.

“The program has been a huge success and we will definitely offer it again next year,” Ruberti said.

Until then, Spagnola said the city pool at Veterans Park will reopen for the summer season around July 1 depending on the weather.
