Fonda to host final weekend of racing
Just a few notes heading into the final weekend of racing at Fonda Speedway.
The 602 sportsman feature that was postponed by rain last Saturday night will now be run as part of the Saturday night program for the two-day Mohawk Valley Weekend.
Unfortunately, before the rains hit, a nine-car wreck on the frontstretch as the cars came down to take the green probably ended the season for many of the teams and drivers.
“Happy” Harry Shaffer suffered a shoulder injury in the wreck, and according to social media is undergoing treatment that will have him sidelined for a few months.
The season also has been cut short for modified driver Alton Palmer who was involved in a hard flip Saturday in which his car was hit after coming to rest in the first turn. Palmer also reportedly has a major shoulder injury that will keep him on the sidelines for a few months.
Friday night’s race program will include the inaugural running of the Ultimate Underdog feature for modifieds.
The 33-lap, $2,000-to-win event is intended for drivers who have not won a feature and finished out of the top five in points at any track this season.
The event features $250 to take the green.
It also should be noted that the start time for Saturday’s racing is 6 p.m. instead of the normal 6:45 p.m. start time.
Most Popular Drivers
I was going to present the Most Popular Driver sponsored by The Leader-Herald plaques on Victory Lane last Saturday during intermission, but due to the stepped up pace of the program because of approaching weather was unable to.
I did present the plaques to three of the fan-voted winners in the pits between races.
Receiving the Most Popular Driver awards this year were Korey Wilder (modified), Harry Shaffer (602 Sportsman) and Ellis Shaffer (street stock). Kenny Gates received the most votes in the pro stock division and will receive his plaque this weekend.
Glen Ridge Motorsports Park
The Ridge will be dark for a couple of weeks but will spring back to life Oct. 16 and 17 with its season-ending Grand Daddy weekend featuring the 602 Crate Nationals sponsored by Adirondac Leather and Don’s Towing.
Lap sponsorship is available for the event and ads are being solicited for a special program to be available for the event.
Sponsors are asked to call 848-0608 for details.
It was announced earlier this season that this would be the final season of racing for fan-favorite A.J. Romano.
Saturday’s 100-lap Mohawk Valley Weekend Super DIRTcar Series main event is scheduled to be Romano’s final modified race.
The annual Fonda Speedway Yearbook published by The Leader-Herald will be available this weekend at the speedway.
