Variety keeping Varin busy

Danny Varin has proven himself behind the wheel of a big-block modified and a 305 sprinter on the CRSA circuit.

Now the second-generation driver has expanded his horizons with a ride in the Dave Crankshaw-owned 360 sprinter on the ESS circuit.

“I am having fun racing,” Varin said. “We have Dan Cuomo’s No. 07p sprinter in the 305 division, the No. 00 360- sprinter and of course Ed Munger’s No. 93 big block modified. All are super competitive anytime on the track.”

Varin and Munger have switched their regular weekly racing venue for the “T-Rex Express” from Saturday nights at Fonda Speedway to Utica-Rome on Sunday.

“We kind of figured the track was going to be a little inconsistent this season and we wanted to run where the surface was going to be more consistent,” Varin said. “There were a couple of things that happened the first two weeks that we didn’t agree with, so this was a good move for us.”

Varin said the team will be back at Fonda this week for a shot at the big money offered in the featured 44-lap, $4,444-plus to win Lou Lazzaro Memorial.

“Fonda is still my favorite track and we will be back there with the modified for special events,” he said.

The sprint car season has gotten off to a shaky start as engine problems has slowed the progress for both teams.

“We were supposed to run Malta and Fonda last week with the 00 but we got back too late with the motor to get ready for Malta and Fonda rained out,” Varin said. “We did finish fourth with both the modified and the sprint car at Utica-Rome, but the engine still wasn’t right in the sprinter.”

Revamped Fonda schedule

Due to last week’s rainout, the 44-lap, $4,444-to-win Lou Lazzaro Memorial race will be run this Saturday, while a possible rescheduled date for the ESS sprinters is yet to be announced.

The winners of the modified heat races will take home $250, while the winners of the Hard Luck Award, the Hard Charger Award and the Top Invader Awards during the modified feature will receive an additional $113.

The tailgate party also will be this Saturday, while veterans and active miliary will receive free general admission with a valid ID and firefighters will receive $2 off general admission with an ID.

Also fans wearing a Lou Lazzaro hat, shirt or jacket will receive a $4 discount off the $10 general admission price.

Big weekend for Friesen

Stewart Friesen found the track at Utica-Rome Speedway to his liking over the Memorial Day Weekend.

Friesen swept the modified and ESS sprint car features at the track on the opening night of the Victoria 200 Weekend. He completed the weekend feature sweep Monday, picking up the win in the $10,000-to-win Victoria 200.

Bonus collected

Rocky Warner became the first driver to race his way to three feature wins on the season at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park.

For the achievement in the 602 sportsman division, Warner collected the incentive bonus offered by speedway promoter Mike Sowle of four new tires.

Next up: a drum of fuel for the first driver in any division to reach five feature wins this season at The Ridge.
