FMCC men, women lose in semifinals of regional tournament

The Fulton-Montgomery Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end in the semifinals of the Region III Division III Tournament on Saturday.

The FMCC men lost 84-82 in overtime to Mohawk Valley Community College at Herkimer College, while the Lady Raiders dropped a 65-61 decision to North Country Community College at Onondaga Community College.

Men

HERKIMER — Jonathan Dean finished with 36 points to power Mohawk Valley to an overtime win over FMCC in a semifinal contest Saturday.

Justin Steed had 16 points for the Hawks, while Jordanny Cuevas-Marte added 13 points.

Amadou Diakite scored 21 points to lead FMCC, while Chris Toussaint and Juwan Malone each had 16 points. Darren Demmitt added 14 points for the Raiders, who led 33-30 at the half.

FMCC finished its season with a 20-7 overall record.

In the other semifinal game, host Herkimer posted an 84-75 victory over Corning Community College.

Darius Hines and Musa Pough each scored 16 points to lead the Generals, while Isaiah Stone and Jaymes Jackson each had 13 points. Keshaun Howard added 14 points for Herkimer.

The Generals led 44-32 at the half on their way to the win.

Christian Simmons scored 23 points to lead Corning (18-8), while Jon Ward had 21 points. Jahlil Nougues added 17 points for the Red Barons.

In Sunday’s championship game, Herkimer posted a 71-66 victory over MVCC.

Derrick Felder scored 17 points to lead the Generals. He also was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Howard and Pough each had 13 points for Herkimer.

Cuevas-Marte led the Hawks with 23 points, while Dean had 14 points. Eddie Mehmetaj scored 12 points for MVCC and Jamale Cummings added 11 points.

Joining Felder on the all-tournament team were Cuevas-Marte, Dean, Diakite, Pough and Simmons.

Herkimer (28-1) advances to National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Tournament, beginning March 14 in Rochester, Minn.

MVCC finished its season with a 25-3 overall record.

Women

SYRACUSE — The FMCC women’s team saw its season end with a 65-61 loss to North Country Community College in the semifinals Saturday.

The Lady Raiders closed trailed by two points with 12 seconds left after a shot by DiAsia DeBoue before the Saints sealed the win with a pair of free throws.

Niaimani Marshall led FMCC with 29 points. DeBoue finished with 15 for the Lady Raiders and McKiea Weekes added 12 points.

In the other semifinal contest, Jefferson Community College edged host Onondaga, 61-60, at Allyn Hall.

Ashlyn Eyles scored a career-high 29 points for the Cannoneers.

Sydni Eure finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds for Onondaga, while Katelyn Karleski added 14 points.

In Sunday’s title game, Ty Taylor scored 23 points to lead North Country to a 74-64 victory over Jefferson.

It was the 22nd straight win for the Saints, who improved to 27-2 overall.

Kayla Carder scored 16 points for North Country, which advances to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.

Carder was named the tournament’s MVP, while North Country’s Jasmine Cruse, Jefferson’s Alyson Crosby and Eyles, FMCC’s Marshall and Onondaga’s Eure were named to the all-tournament team.

Jefferson finished its season with a 20-7 overall record.
