Area athletes compete at state track meet
STATEN ISLAND — Four area athletes competed Saturday in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Amsterdam’s Lauren Santiago, Charli Beekman and Gabby Stanavich, and Broadalbin-Perth’s Sean Meher all competed in the meet.
Meher finished 12th in the long jump with a leap of 21-1 and 18th in the high jump with a height of 6-0.
Beekman, a sophomore, posted a time of 7.48 seconds in the 55-meter dash, finishing fourth in her heat and 22nd overall.
Santiago, a senior was second in her heat with a personal-best and school-record time of 40.44 seconds in the 300 meters. The time also placed her 11th overall.
Stanavich, a senior, was third in her heat and 14th overall in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.72 seconds.
Santiago also was honored as the Section II female sportsmanship award winner.
She is the fifth Amsterdam competitor to earn the honor since 2013 — joining John Hardies (2013) Izaiah Brown (2014,2015) Olivia Lazarou (2017) and Brenda Santana (2018).
