Racing Around: Youthful champs at The Ridge

Every few years there are a new group of “Young Guns” touted around the racetracks.

But I think Glen Ridge Motorsports Park may have set a new standard for the distinction.

When they crowned their track champions last Sunday, two of the champions honored are not even old enough to have driver’s permits.

Mini Stock 4-cylinder, single-cam champion C.J. Shepler is a 15-year-old sophomore at Warrensburg High School and Limited Sportsman champion Derrick McGrew Jr. is just 11 years old.

Shepler recorded two wins in 17 starts this season with 14 top five finishes.

McGrew, a sixth-grader, was a three-night a week racer, turning laps and winning at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Fonda Speedway and The Ridge.

He finished the regular season with 16 feature wins (nine in 18 starts at Glen Ridge, six at Fonda Speedway and one at Albany-Saratoga) leading to track championships at Fonda and The Ridge.

I guess you could also throw Garrett Poland into that mix also as he is a two-time junior slingshot champion with nine wins in 18 features this year at Glen Ridge and an eye on moving up in the near future.

Dave Constantino picked up his first track championship in the Crate Modified division.

“Cousin Luke” Horning parked the “Rando-Cando” Pro Stock in Victory Lane nine times in 18 starts en route to grabbing his second-straight division championship.

Steve Cosselman drove to his first street stock track championship and did double duty at the end of the season after purchasing the pro stock raced by Ron Delease.

P.J. Bleau grabbed five feature wins to edge Josh Samrov by four points to capture the Mini Stock 4-cylinder dual cam championship.

Mike Hill notched eight feature wins en route to posting his second-straight All-Star Senior Slingshot championship.

Racing at The Ridge will take a break this week and return for its Fall Racing Series action on Sept. 23.

Track of Champions returns to action

So far the weather looks clear for Fonda Speedway to return to action Saturday with a seven division race program feature the rain-postponed 13th Annual Hondo Classic for Pro Stocks honoring the late Hondo Carpenter.

Also on the racing card will be the modified, sportsman, limited sportsman, street stock, CRSA Sprints, and the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series.

The night’s race program will be sponsored by Benjamin Moore Paints and Mark Mortensen who carries a sponsorship by Benjamin Moore Paints will be hosting a Meet and Greet at the Fonda Museum before the start of the evenings race program.
