Area football teams kick off season tonight

The local high school football season gets underway tonight with all the local teams in action.

The Gloversville Huskies, Johnstown Sir Bills, Amsterdam Rugged Rams and Canajoharie-Fort Plain Cougars all open their 2018 campaigns at home, while the Fonda-Fultonville Braves, Broadalbin-Perth Patriots and Dolgeville Blue Devils take to the road on opening night.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at Gloversville

Today, 7 p.m.

The Huskies will be tested right off the bat as they host the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Spartans in a Class A Grasso Division opener tonight at Robert E. Gould Stadium at Husky Field.

The Spartans. coached by Gloversville graduate Matt Shell, are seeking their third straight sectional championship with four returning starters on offense and five defensive starters back.

With the graduation of quarterback William “Buck” Galster and running back Jared Malagisi, the Huskies will be looking to Anthony Tomek-Russell to step up at QB and Sam Getman and Patrick Raldiris to lead the running game along with Julien Deumaga as a primary receiving target.

“This group of players have been working hard day-in and day-out and I am looking forward to see them develop,” Gloversville coach Jared Bongo said.

Hudson Falls at Johnstown

Today, 7 p.m.

The Sir Bills graduated 16 players from their 2017 squad that went 2-7 overall but return starting seniors Trey Stover, Marcus Nellis, Evan White and Vic Orsell.

“We have a small senior group, with a strong young core hungry to make things happen,” Johnstown coach Tyler Hall said.

Hudson Falls has a large group of returning players, including 12 starters, from a squad that reached the Class B semifinals last year.

Lansingburgh at Amsterdam

Today, 7 p.m.

The Rugged Rams are looking to put their 3-6 record from last year behind them as they battle for a sectional berth in the Class A Capital Division against Troy, Averill Park, LaSalle, Columbia and Green Tech.

Amsterdam opens its season tonight at the Lynch Literacy Academy field with a non-league contest against Class B contender Lansingburgh.

The Rams will be led by returning veterans Anthony Barone, Nate Lucente and Jose Merced and newcomers Trey Ausfield, Peyton Ausfeld and Trevon Joyner.

Lansingburgh is coming off a two-win season and returns 12 players to the field this fall.

“We are not very deep only 30 players and we are very young,” Amsterdam coach Doug Edick said.

Fort Edward/Argyle at

Canajoharie-Fort Plain

Today, 7 p.m.

In their second season as a combined squad, Canajoharie-Fort Plain moves up from Class D to Class C this season and will battle in a touch Class C Central Division against Fonda-Fultonville, Holy Trinity, Mechanicville, Stillwater and Tamarac.

C-FP will be led by 4-year starters Chrstian Herget and Nick Mazzarella along with 3-year starter Joey Nare along with Sam Terwilliger and Isaiah Logan.

The Cougars will open tonight against Class D contender Fort Edward/Argyle under the lights at Canajoharie High School.

Fonda-Fultonville at Rensselaer

Today, 7 p.m.

With nine returning starters from last year’s squad that went 1-8, the Braves will look to get the season off on the right foot when they travel to take on Class D Rensselaer tonight.

John Mancini returns to quarterback Fonda-Fultonville this year along with running back Massimo DiCaptrio, wide receivers Garrett Neff, Brady Myles and Jonathan Flander along with tight end Dylan Hamlen. They are joined by veteran linemen Cade Kearns, Adrian Claburn and Tom Mauceri.

Broadalbin-Perth at Scotia-Glenville

Today, 7 p.m.

With veteran quarterback Brodryk Benton leading the way, Broadalbin-Perth will jump up to play Class A Scotia-Glenville tonight.

Benton is surrounded by a solid group of returning starters including veteran wide receivers Glenn Buyce, Bob Munn and Nick Garen along with running backs Dan Priamo and Kobe Waldvogel.

Scotia-Glenville went winless last year and return with 10 starters returning along with a solid group of first year varsity players off a successful junior varsity squad.

Dolgeville at Frankfort-Schuyler

Today, 7 p.m.

Dolgeville will begin defense of its Section III, Class D championship tonight at Frankfort-Schuyler.

The blue Devils graduated 15 starters from the championship squad, eight from the offensive side of the ball, including running backs, Nic Bailey, Chase Doxtader and Devin Gorinshek and quarterback Aasin Claus.

Coach Dan Zilkowski said this year’s squad has “A good team chemistry and good overall team speed. The keys to success this year will be staying healthy and injury free as the younger players step up and learn to be competitive in a challenging league.”
