Racing Around: Schedules are loaded for local speedways
Although the weather forecast for the weekend looks like a washout for the practice sessions at Fonda Speedway and Glen Ridge Motorsports Park the 2018 schedules for the local tracks looks to be action packed.
Just looking over the schedules you can see the Demitraszek Management team of Pete and Matt Demitraszek at Fonda Speedway and the team of Mike Parillo and Ray Sefrin at The Ridge put extra effort into putting schedules together that should draw race fans to the tracks on Saturday and Sunday nights.
While both tracks are scheduled for a shakedown this weekend, Glen Ridge is slated to open its points battle on its season opener at 4 p.m. on April 15.
Fonda has a second practice day slated for April 14 before dropping the green flag its traditional season-opening race, the 50-lap, $5,500-to-win Ice Jam at 4 p.m. on April 21. It is also the first night of points for all weekly divisions.
Parillo and Sefrin have booked special events into the race season including King of Dirt tour events on April 29, July 18 and Sept. 9. There is also a challenge series for the street stock division between cars from Glen Ridge and Albany-Saratoga Speedway on May 13, July 18 and Aug. 19. There will also be a mid-week show this year featuring the small-block modifieds of the King of Dirt Tour on July 18.
There are also fireworks, driver meet-and-greets and fan appreciation nights on tap and I am sure there will be other unannounced promotions along the way.
However, one thing that is not on the schedule at The Ridge this season are sprint cars.
Sprint cars will take to the Fonda Speedway half-mile five times this season.
The Empire Super Sprints will be on hand for the traditional Memorial Day Weekend event, while the CRSA sprinters will take to the speedway three times this season on April 28, June 30 and Sept. 15.
The Kramer Williamson Memorial 25-lap feature for sprint cars will be held as part of the the Thunder Along the Mohawk weekend festivities on Sept. 22.
There are very few Saturday’s at the Track of Champions that have not got something special going on, whether it is an added class like vintage cars, meet-and-greets, bike giveaways or tribute nights.
One of the highlights again this season that is expected to draw some of the top competitors in the Northeast is the Aug. 1 100-lap “The Jack” Super DIRTcar Series race that carries with it a guaranteed starting spot in the modified feature at Super DIRT Week. The mid-week show also will feature The Hondo Classic for pro stocks.
Also added to the race schedule this year is a Run Whatcha Brung event on Sept. 29 and a pair of Drag Racing on Dirt events on Sunday July 8 and Aug. 5.
Caroga Creek Speedway also is scheduled for a test and tune this weekend and will announce today if that will take place.
Adam McAuliffe got his season off with the right foot down hard on the pedal and parking his No. 234 in Victory Lane at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey on March 31.
Former sportsman driver Brian Borst will rejoin the competitive ranks at Fonda Speedway this season. Borst had 15 feature wins to his credit before stepping away a few years back.
