H.S. Softball Roundup: Mayfield opens with a victory

MIDDLEBURGH — The Mayfield Lady Panthers opened their season with a strong showing, defeating Middleburgh 8-2 in a Western Athletic Conference softball game Friday at Middleburgh High School.

Jillian Botch recorded 11 strike outs in the circle for Mayfield, while hitting a pair of singles and scoring twice to help her cause.

Taryn LaFontaine had two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Lindsey Hampton had a pair of singles, drove in two runs and scored a run.

Sydney Benton had a single and two RBIs, while Juliana Buyce, Kaylee Hampton, Shelbylyn VanNostrand and Bri Hubiak all singled.

Lexi Stephens, Morgan Schafroth, Cassidy Coons and Theresa Risch all singled for Middleburgh.

Mayfield (1-0, 1-0) is scheduled to host Maple Hill on Monday in a non-league game.

Galway 15, Northville 3

GALWAY — Playing its first varsity softball game since 2012, the Northville Lady Falcons pushed a run across the plate in the top of the first but could not hold off Galway as the Lady Eagles picked up their first win of the season Friday at Galway High School.

Emily Shepard had a doubled, singled and drove in a run for Northville.

Emma Smith had a triple and a double to go with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Hanna Hoffman went 2-for-2 with two singles and three runs scored. Justine Quay added a double and two RBIs.

Smith and Kurtzner combined for eight strikeouts and allowed three hits in five innings of work in the circle for Galway.

Foothills Council

Amsterdam 2, Hudson Falls 1 (8 innings)

HUDSON FALLS — Amsterdam manufactured a run in the top of the eighth to pick up the Foothills council victory Friday at Hudson Falls High School.

Jordan Wozniak led off the top of the eighth with a single and Michaela Rust laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her over. Wozniak advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Megan LaMont’s RBI single.

Lady Rams pitcher Sydney Szczepanik set Hudson Falls down in order in the eighth to clinch the victory.

Szczepanik allowed three hits and struck out three for the complete-game victory.

Hailie Casey doubled, while Taylor Ringer and Grace Davis singled to account for the Lady Tigers’ hits.

Lamont had a double to go with the game-winning RBI single, while Wozniak and Emma Patrei had an RBI singles and Karly Power also singled for the Lady Rams.
