Kirk leads Castleton to conference soccer title

CASTLETON, Vt. — Former Gloversville Dragon soccer standout Thomas Kirk has completed his junior season as the Captain of the Castleton University men’s soccer team.

Castleton captured the outright North Atlantic crown for the first time since 2008. The team went undefeated in conference play and Kirk (playing center back) anchored the back line that only conceded 4 goals all season. He played a significant role in nine shut-outs during the 2017 season, including a span of almost 659 straight minutes without conceding a goal.

Having won the conference, Castleton advanced to their first NCAA appearance since 2008, losing to eventual National Champion Messiah College 1-0.

Kirk was named North Atlantic Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, a first in North Atlantic conference history since the award has been given, and he was also named to the First Team All Conference Team. He was named the Spartan’s team Defensive MVP as well.

He started all 21 games this past season and set new career highs in goals, assists, and points.

In December Thomas was named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Scholar All-East Region First Team. A NAC All-Academic honoree, Kirk is the only NAC student-athlete, as well as the only one from a Vermont institution to be named to any Scholar All-East Region teams.

Kirk has been re-named Captain for the 2018 season, which will be his senior year.
