FoJo wrestlers second, C-FP third at Kossman Duals tournament

SCHOHARIE — The Fonda-Johnstown wrestling team posted a 3-2 record on the day to take second place at the Dominick Kossman Dual Tournament Saturday at Schoharie High School.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain also finished 3-2 at the tournament but Fonda-Johnstown won the match between the two local squads 46-36 to earn the tiebreaker in the team standings.

Own Hick went 5-0 on the day in the 99-pound weight class, while Na’Jon Subik also posted a 5-0 record on the day at 220.

FoJo posted victories over Schoharie, 54-33, Canajoharie-Fort Plain 46-36 and Albany, 54-24, while falling to tourney champion Salem-Cambridge 51-33 and Schalmont 42-31.

“I was very pleased with how our kids wrestled today,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Jim Rodecker said. “There were some really tough match ups and our kids rose to the challenge. I think we are starting to peak now, which is perfect timing with sectionals coming up soon.”

Wrangle in the Plains

SCHENECTADY — Amsterdam’s Brennen Rivas took home the 113-pound championship from the Wrangle in the Plains tournament Saturday at Schenectady Armory.

Rivas earned a 13-0 major decision over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Mitchell Craft in the quarterfinal round and decisioned Niskayuna’s Jack Schiavo 7-3 in the semifinals.

Rivas picked up a 4-2 decision over Ravena’s Brandon Mogul in overtime to claim the 113-pound championship.

The Rams Mike Rieken finished second in the tournament at 220 pounds. Rieken pinned Shenendehowa’s Izsiah Vyent in 1:14 in the semifinal round before being decisioned 7-3 in the title bout by John Jay/East Fishkill’s Calvin Anthony.

Daniel Montalvo pinned Shenendehowa’s Michael Dimonda in 4:46 to finish third at 120, while Nick rodecker finished fourth at 132, falling to John Jay/East Fishkill’s John Barber by a 3-2 decision in the consolation finals.

Kyle Taylor (195) and Jacob Garcia (145) finished eighth in the tournament.
