ST. JOHNSVILLE — Playing for the second time in less than 24 hours, the Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville girls basketball team shook off a slow start to post a 48-19 victory over Wells in a non-league contest Saturday.

“We’ve tended to start off slow this season,” OESJ coach Benjamin Liberatore said. “Playing last night a long way from home and getting up and ready for today’s game was tough.”

Fontana LaCoppola led all scorers with 22 points for Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville , while Madison Richardson had eight points.

“We’re trying to rely on their experience because we’ve got a lot of young players,” Liberatore said of LaCoppola and Richardson, who are the only returnees from last year’s team.

Sierra Mauro scored 11 points to lead Wells.

After losing 58-27 at Fort Edward on Friday night, the Lady Wolves were back at it Saturday afternoon.

Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville looked sluggish at the start, going nearly five minutes without a field goal as Wells took 4-0 lead behind baskets from Mauro and Gena Brown.

However, the Lady Wolves regrouped to score the final seven points of the quarter to take a 7-4 lead after eight minutes of play.

Wells trailed 9-8 early in the second quarter before OESJ closed out the first half with a 14-2 run to grab a 23-10 lead at the half.

LaCoppola scored five points in the quarter for the Lady Wolves, while Shian Harmon and Rebecca Trumble each had four points.

OESJ extended its advantage in the second half, outscoring the Lady Indians 25-9 to finish with a 48-19 victory.

“This was a good win for us. It was a nice bounce back after last night’s game,” Liberatore said.

Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville (2-2 overall) is scheduled to host Northville on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Wells (0-1 overall) is slated to travel to Sharon Springs on Monday for a non-league contest at 6 p.m.
