FoJo wrestlers fall to Galway
FONDA — Coming into Thursday’s Western Athletic Conference match with Galway, the Fonda-Johnstown wrestling team looked to make its mark against the defending league champions.
However, the Golden Eagles had other ideas, winning 10 of 14 weight classes on their way to a 53-18 victory.
“We’re beginning to wrestle more complete matches,” Galway coach Rick Poplaski said. “We wrestled pretty well tonight.”
It was the first WAC loss of the season for Fonda-Johnstown, which is competing is the league as a combined team for the first time.
“We expected a lot different results than this,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Jim Rodecker said. “We had some changes in the lineup. We had some kids out sick and injured.”
Galway got on the board first when Joey Scheeren posted a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Justin Kearns at 106 pounds. Fonda-Johnstown lost a team point when Kearns was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after the match.
The Golden Eagles won the next two weight classes by pin as Adam Henderson pinned Fo-Jo’s Zen Myles in 4:46 at 113 pounds at 120 pounds and Brandon Grupe pinned Marquis Johnson in 21 seconds.
Fonda-Johnstown earned its first win of the night at 126 pounds when Jonathan Cranker pinned Dylan Collins in 2:45 to make the score 15-5.
Galway answered by winning the next seven bouts.
Collin Bayer collected a forfeit win at 132 pounds for the Golden Eagles, Billy Ous (138 pounds) pinned Fonda-Johnstown’s Kyle Salamack in 29 seconds and Jonathan Hoyt (145) outlasted Zach Maxson 7-5.
Riccardo Dery gave Galway a 36-5 lead by pinning Cameron Sweet in 28 seconds at 152 pounds.
After a double forfeit at 160 pounds, Dillan Palaszewski registered a technical fall over Fo-Jo’s Kyle Gray, winning 16-0 in 3:51.
Damian Novack extended Galway’s lead to 47-5 by pinng Mike Rumberger in 1:02 at 182 pounds before Sam D’Alessandro collected the Golden Eagles’ final win of the night by forfeit at 195 pounds.
Fonda-Johnstown won the final three matches of the night, but it was too little, too late as Galway earned the 53-18 victory.
Na’Jon Subik notched an 11-3 major decision over Ddraig Bouchard at 220 pounds and Luke Ahrens rallied for a 5-2 victory over Russell Cook at 285 pounds.
“This was probably one of the toughest matches that we’ll have in our league this year,” Rodecker said. “Things just didn’t go our way tonight.”
In the final weight class of the night, Fo-Jo’s Loretta Newcomer collected a forfeit win at 99 pounds.
“We’re a small school and don’t have a lot of numbers, so we have to spread people out to fill out our lineup,” Poplaski said. “The kids are understanding and accepting their roles and that helps in terms of our team effort.”
Galway (11-3 overall, 2-0 WAC) is scheduled to host the Greg Rockwood Invitational on Dec. 28 and 29. Fonda-Johnstown (2-7 overall, 1-1 WAC) will be among the teams competing at the two-day event.
