Boys Basketball Roundup: Second-half surge lifts Panthers past Cougars

JOHNSTOWN — After heading into the half with a 27-21 lead, Mayfield outscored Canajoharie 38-17 in the second half on its way to a 65-38 victory in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

The game was a non-league contest between the Western Athletic Conference rivals.

Trevon Gifford scored 26 points to lead Mayfield, while Garret Delaney finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Tommy Gates added five points, six assists and seven rebounds for the Panthers.

Gifford scored 20 of his points in the second half.

Luke VanSlyke scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Canajoharie, which was held without a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Canajoharie (0-4 overall) is scheduled to host Duanesburg in its Western Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday at 7 p.m., while Mayfield (3-1 overall) is set to travel to Galway for its WAC opener Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Matthew Boyle scored 18 points to lead the Sir Bills, while Keegan Feinour added nine points.

Johnstown (0-2 overall) is scheduled to host South Glens Falls on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in its home opener at Warren Street Elementary School.

Fonda-Fultonville (1-0 overall) is slated to host Fort Plain on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
