Dolgeville wallops Waterville
DOLGEVILLE — The Dolgeville Blue Devils rolled past the Waterville Indians in a Section III Class D crossover game Saturday.
The Blue Devils got touchdowns from five different players as they tallied up a 62-28 win over the Indians. Devin Gorinshek accounted for three touchdowns, Chase Doxtader added two while Nic Bailey, Riley Nagle and Zach Smith each added one.
Dolgeville jumped on the board first. After forcing Waterville to punt on their first series, the Blue Devils fumbled on first down and the Indians recovered on the Dolgeville 28-yard line. On first down Smith intercepted the ball and gave the Blue Devils a first down on their own 13. Dolgeville would make no mistakes this time. On first down Gorinshek broke loose for a 42 yard pick up and Bailey picked up 20 more on the next play. A facemask penalty moved the ball to the 12 and Bailey added five more yards on two carries to put the ball on the seven. On third and five Doxtader took the inside handoff and ran it in for the first score of the game. The conversion run failed and the Blue Devils led 6-0 with just over three minutes gone in the quarter. “We had a couple of miscues here and there that we would like to get back but …,” Dolgeville head coach Dan Zilkowski said.
A Waterville punt gave Dolgeville the ball back on their 33. After a 64-yard run from Doxtader, Bailey took it in from the three and the conversion pass was good to put the Blue Devils up 14-0.
Waterville quickly struck back on the ensuing kick-off. Jacob Hunt took the ball at the nine and ran to his left. There he turned the corner and raced up the sideline for a 91 yard touchdown. Hunt also hauled in the conversion pass to close the score to 14-8. “Waterville set up a nice wall and kudos to them”, Zilkowski said. “You have to tip your hat to them”.
Doxtader returned the following kick out to the Waterville 43 and on first down Bailey rumbled for six tough yards. On second and four, Gorinshek broke through tacklers and rolled in for a 37 yard touchdown. Aasin Claus hit Gorinshek in the end zone for the conversion making the score 22-8 with 6:16 still remaining in the first quarter.
On the Indians next possession they put together a 43-yard drive to move them to the Dolgeville 16. Facing fourth-and-11 Waterville attempted a field goal but Flynn Bliss broke through and blocked the kick allowing the Blue Devils to take over on their 30. Three plays later, Doxtader scored his second touchdown of the quarter with a 36 yard run. Claus’ conversion pass to Gorinshek put the Blue Devils ahead 30 – 8 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Dolgeville add on three more touchdowns. The first of which came at the 9:06 mark. The Blue Devils got the ball when Brendan Snowman recovered a Waterville fumble on the Indians 31.
Two penalties slowed the Blue Devils down but on third and two from the 23 Bailey picked up 13 yards and a facemask penalty moved the ball to the five. On first and goal, Gorinshek took the handoff and bowled over three tacklers to roll in for the score. Bailey ran in the conversion and the lead had grown to 30 points. “Devin Gorinshek has really turned it up a notch this year”, Zilkowski said.
On their next possession the Blue Devils made it look easy. Starting on their own 29, Claus hit Dylan Lamphere for a 20-yard reception and then Claus kept the ball and ran for 12 yards to move the ball to the Indians 39. Bailey picked up five yards and an offside penalty moved the ball to the 29. Bailey added another 10 yard run and on first and 10 from the 19, Claus connected with Nagle for a touchdown reception. Claus ran the conversion in to make the score 46-8.
With time winding down in the half, Dolgeville tacked on one more touchdown. After moving the ball from their own 20 down to the Indians’ 17, Claus threw a perfect touch pass to the corner of the end zone where Smith went up and hauled it in for the score. Bailey ran it in for the two point conversion and the score stood at 54-8 at the half.
Dolgeville received the second half kickoff and Doxtater returned it to the Waterville 38 where they wasted little time to score. Bailey rumbled for nine yards and on second down Claus pitched to Gorinshek on the option and he ran it in for the score from 29 yards out. Claus connected with Gorinshek on the conversion pass and the Blue Devils had upped the score to 62- 8. Dolgeville then turned to their reserves to finish game and gain valuable playing experience.
Two possessions later, Waterville managed to put some points on the board. The Indians put together a 76-yard drive that ended with Ryan Hunt running it in from the 17-yard line. The conversion run failed and the score was 62-14.
In the fourth quarter The Indians scored two more touchdowns. The first came on a 20 yard run by Nathan Johnson with 8:34 remaining in the game.
The pass for the two-point conversion failed. The second score came with just 13.4 seconds to play. Quarterback Trevor Dow ran it in from the two and the pass was good for the conversion making the final score 62-28.
