Battisti, Melita win two classes at Royal

Blowers, Miller, Graham, Stumpf, Cleveland, Hirschfeld also earn victories

CAROGA LAKE — Eight area riders were among the winners during STR/Monster Energy Supercross competition Wednesday at Royal Mountain Ski Area.

Johnstown’s Casey Battisti swept both motos to win the 122-250 amateur and 122-open amateur classes.

Fonda’s Tyler Blowers won both motos to claim victory in the 122-open novice class. Blowers also was second in the 122-250 novice class.

Johnstown’s Maxx Miller was second in the first moto and first in the second moto to win the 50cc pee wee senior 7-and-8-year-old class.

Johnstown’s Bennett Melita swept both motos to win the junior mini 9-to-11-year-old class. He also won the mini 60 7-to-11-year-old class placing second in the first moto and first in the second moto. Melita also placed second in the mini 80 9-to-11-year-old class.

Gloversville’s Shane Graham won both motos to win the 12-inch pit bike class, while Caroga Lake’s Chad Stumpf swept both motos to win the plus-30 amateur class.

Johnstown’s Todd Cleveland won both motos to claim victory in the plus-30 expert class and Amsterdam’s Matthew Hirschfeld won the quad schoolboy class.

In addition to Melita and Battisti, Ballston Spa’s Brett Burns and Middle Grove’s Kenneth DeRidder also won two separate classes.

Burns won the 122-250 novice and open mini 10-to-16-year-old classes, while DeRidder won the 122-125 two-stroke and schoolboy classes.

In the quad classes, Chadwicks’ Colt Kimball (mini quad 50cc), Ballston Spa’s Cody Milanese (mini quad 51-90cc), Troy’s Peter Miller (quad amateur), Queensbury’s Tyler Jarvis (quad expert) and Queensbury’s Connor Cross (quad novice) posted victories.

Other winners included East Berne’s Joseph Vitetta (122-open expert), East Berne’s Triton Hofelich (50cc pee wee junior 4-6), Cobleskill’s Joe Edwards (mini 80 12-15), Westerlo’s Blake Shaver (mini 80 9-11) and South Glens Falls’ Floyd Billington (plus-40 amateur).

Several area riders posted top-five finishes.

In the 122-125 two-stroke class, Fonda’s Carter Petersen was third, Gloversville’s Ryan Whitehouse was fourth and Nelliston’s Tyler Dygert was fifth.

Petersen also placed third in the open mini 10-to-16-year-old class, while Whitehouse was third in the schoolboy class.

Fultonville’s Sheldon Wayman was third in the 122-250 novice class. Wayman also was fourth in the 122-open novice class.

Johnstown’s Kip Simonds was third in the 50cc pee wee junior 4-to-6-year-old class, while Gloversville’s Evan Darling was fourth.

In the mini 80 12-to-15-year-old class, Johnstown’s Hayden Zelich was third and Gloversville’s Devin Buyce was fourth.

Mayfield’s Nick Cross was fifth in the 122-open novice class, while Johnstown’s Michael Ward was second in the plus-30 expert class.

Johnstown’s Brandon Handy was third in the schoolboy class.

In the plus-40 amateur class, Gloversville’s Dennis Fitzpatrick was fourth and Broadalbin’s Fred Seckler was fifth.

Broadalbin’s Josh Deuel was second in the quad amateur class, while Broadalbin’s Colby Watras was fourth.

In the quad novice class, Mayfield’s Andrew Ashbey was fourth and Broadalbin’s Anthony Covey was fifth.

In the 12-inch pit bike class, Johnstown’s Brandon Groves was second and Gloversville’s Kyle Chase was fourth.

Amsterdam’s Calvin Dopp was fifth in the junior mini 9-to-11-year-old class, while Dolgeville’s Jim George was fourth in the mini 60 7-to-11-year-old class.

In the quad schoolboy class, Fonda’s Skyler Olmstead was third and Amsterdam’s Courtney Trombley was fourth.

A field of 136 riders competed Wednesday.

Just two Wednesdays remain in the 2017 supercross season, which wraps up Aug. 23.

Royal Mountain also is slated to host a motocross event Aug. 20.
