Four area players were among those selected to the 2017 Foothills Council boys tennis all-star team.
Gloversville’s Damian Bruce, Brian Hugo and Nicholas Bruce were named all-stars, while Amsterdam’s Dan Van Eps also was honored.
Gloversville and Scotia-Glenville shared the Foothills Council title this season after both team posted 13-1 league records. The Huskies and Tartans split their two regular-season matches. Gloversville defeated Scotia-Glenville in the Section II Class A semifinals before losing to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in the championship match.
Gloversville, which finished with a 14-2 overall record, reached the title match for the first time after winning at least a share of the league title for the second straight year.
Scotia-Glenville had Laif Lundstrom and Jacob McKenzie named to the all-star team, while Schuylerville’s had Kai Kabori-Hotchkiss and Spencer Swoboda named all-stars.
Rounding out the Foothills Council all-star team were Queensbury’s Nick Ricciardelli, South Glens Falls’ Alex Spada, Hudson Falls’ Joe Potvin and Glens Falls’ Andrew Nizolek.
Gloversville sent two singles players and two doubles players to the Section II Tournament as well.
Kyle Fonda lost to Shaker’s Asotosh Yawger, 8-2, in his lone match, while Damian Bruce defeated Averill Park’s Lucas Harland, 8-3, in the first round and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s Jacquin Rossen, 10-4, in the second round. In the third round, he was eliminated by Saratoga Springs’ Max Lee, 10-7.
In the doubles tournament, Cameron Biche and Ryan Issa went 1-1 in their two match, while Nicholas Bruce and Hugo went 2-1.
“Overall, a good showing for Gloversville at individual sectionals this year. When members of your team are still out there playing when most everyone else has gone home, well that’s a good thing,” Gloversville coach Mike Bruce said. “Everyone played well and we advanced multiple rounds. We’re looking to go even further next year. It was great effort to cap off a great and memorable season.”
