H.S. Softball Roundup: Lady Rams slip past Queensbury

QUEENSBURY — Having successfully petitioned its way into the Section II Class A tournament, the Amsterdam softball team made the most of its opportunity Thursday.

The 10th-seeded Lady Rams posted a 4-3, eight-inning win over seventh-seeded Queensbury in a first-round matchup.

The Lady Rams led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh only to have the Spartans tie the game with two runs.

Amsterdam scored twice in the top of the eighth and held on for the victory.

Gianna Quatrini was 2-for-3 for the Lady Rams, while Nicole DeRose was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Justice Colvin was 3-for-4 for Queensbury, while Cora Streets was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Lady Rams won the regular-season meeting between the Foothills Council rivals, 9-2, on April 26 at Shuttleworth Park.

Amsterdam (10-11 overall) advances to face second-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in the Class A semifinals Monday in Burnt Hills.

Queensbury finished its season with an 8-11 overall record.

Class C First Round

Warrensburg 7, Mayfield 6

WARRENSBURG — Megan Hughes went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBIs to power fourth-seeded Warrensburg to a victory over 13th-seeded Mayfield in the first round of the Class C tournament.

The Burgers led 5-0 after three innings before hanging on for the victory after the Lady Panthers mounted a late rally.

Mayfield hit into a 4-6-3 double play with tying run at third in top of the seventh inning to end the game.

Britanny Frasier was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Warrensburg, while Jordan Hill was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Taryn LaFontaine, Angelina Mannino, Morgan Lathrop and Lindsey Hampton all had two singles for Mayfield, while Kylie Cotugno and Juliana Buyce each had singles.

Warrensburg (11-5 overall) is scheduled to host fifth-seeded Lake George in the Class C quarterfinals Monday at 4:30 p.m. The fifth-seeded Warriors posted a 4-3 victory over Maple Hill in their first-round matchup Thursday.

Mayfield finished its season with a 9-9 overall record.

Class C First Round

Hoosic Valley 7, Canajoharie 0

SCHAGHTICOKE — Camille Coyne pitched a two-hitter to lead seventh-seeded Hoosic Valley to a shutout victory over 10th-seeded Canajoharie in the opening round of the Class C tournament.

Coyne struck out 17 and walked just one to earn the complete-game victory.

Taylor Champagne had a triple and two singles for Hoosic Valley (14-6 overall), while Bridget Ryan had two singles. Kaitlyn Suschinski added a single and two RBIs for the Indians, and Ashley Madigan and Renee Parry each had doubles.

Mackenzie Bowerman and Madison Koelbl each had a single for Canajoharie.

Hoosic Valley will face second-seeded Chatham in the quarterfinals on Monday. The Panthers cruised to a 17-1 victory over 15th-seeded Middleburgh in their first-round matchup.

Canajoharie finished its season with an 11-4 overall record.

Mechanicville 20, Galway 3

MECHANICVILLE — Galway, the No. 14 seed, saw its season come to an end in the opening round of the Class C tournament.

Mechanicville, the No. 3 seed, will host sixth-seeded Greenville on Monday in the Class C quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. The Spartans posted an 8-6 victory over 11th-seeded Cambridge in their first-round matchup.

Galway finished its season with an 8-8 overall record.
