Three Mayfield skiers named to Section II all-star team

Three Mayfield skiers were among those named to the 2016-17 Section II Nordic Skiing all-star team.

Josh Febbie was named a boys second-team all-star for the Panthers, while Maggy Lambo and Madison Relyea were named girls second-team all-stars.

Febbie was an alternate for the Section II boys state-meet team after placing 13th at the Section II Championship meet at North Creek Ski Bowl on Feb. 15.

Relyea, an eighth-grader, placed 23rd in her first trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Nordic Skiing Championships at North Creek Ski Bowl on Feb. 27.

Relyea covered the course in a time of 28:08.3.

Relyea finished fourth with a time of 29:12.4 in the girls 7K classic race at the Section II Nordic Skiing Championships at North Creek Ski Bowl on Feb. 15 to earn her state-meet spot. It is the second trip to a state meet this school year for Relyea, who placed sixth in the girls Class D race at the state cross country championships in November.

Relyea also was part of the ninth-place relay team at the state meet on Feb. 28.

Relyea teamed with Queensbury’s Anna Manzella and Shenendehowa’s Meghan Caron on the Section II B team to post a time of 26:45.2 in the 3 x 3K skate relay event. Relyea posted a time of 8:53.6 on her leg of the relay.

Relyea was fourth at the Section II Championships, while Lambo was 15th.

Queensbury placed four skiers on the boys first team, as Nino Manzella, Dan Manzella, Brian Beyerbach and James Conway were named all-stars. Johnsburg’s Seamus Tomb rounded out the first-team all-stars,

The Spartans swept the top four spots at the Section II Championships, with Beyerbach first, Conway second, Daniel Manzella third and Nino Manzella fourth. Queensbury won the team title at sectionals.

The second team consisted of Shenendehowa’s David Benson, Saratoga Catholic’s Michael Halligan, Hadley-Luzerne’s Erik Schreiner and Johnsburg’s Casey Tomb.

Named to the third team were Johnsburg’s William Davis, Saratoga Springs’ Alex Fragomeni, Queensbury’s Sullivan Fitzgerald, Hadley-Luzerne’s Jon Schreiner and Johnsburg’s Harry Helinski.

Queensbury had Beyerbach, Conway, Daniel Manzella, Nino Manzella, Aiden Rowley and Fitzgerald qualify for the Section II state-meet team. Rounding out the Section II representatives were Halligan, Benson, Johnsburg’s Seamus Tomb, Shenendehowa’s Justin Caron, Johnsburg’s Casey Tomb and Schreiner.

Queensbury finished second in the state meet team standings. Daniel Manzella placed third to lead the Spartans, while Nino Manzella was fifth.

Also competing for Queensbury were Conway (11th), Fitzgerald (25th) and Rowley (31st).

Other Section II finishers included Benson (12th), Johnsburg’s Seamus Tomb (14th), Schreiner (16th), Halligan (18th), Johnsburg’s Casey Tomb (24th) and Shenendehowa’s Justin Caron (35th).

Queensbury placed four athletes on the girls first team.

Eliza Blood, Bailey Gengel, Emily Atamanchuk and Maggie Borgos all made the first team for the Spartans.

Blood, Atamanchuk and Gengel swept the top three spots at the Section II Championships, leading Queensbury to the team title.

Shenendehowa’s Anna Wiedmann rounded out the first-team selections.

In addition to Mayfield’s Lambo and Relyea, the second-team all-stars included Johnsburg’s Ava Anderson, Shenendehowa’s Julianne Burns, Guilderland’s Erin Miceli and Queensbury’s Anna Manzella.

The third-team all-star selections were Glens Falls’ Sarah Burton, Queensbury’s Alexis Bartlett, Shenendehowa’s Eve Schoen, Scotia-Glenville’s Brianna Fitzgerald and Shenendehowa’s Meghana Caron.

Blood, Atamanchuk, Gengel, Borgos, Anna Manzella and Bartlett all competed at the state meet for Queensbury. Rounding out the Section II state-meet team were Wiedmann, Caron, Burns, Miceli and Anderson.

Atamanchuk was third at states, Blood was ninth and Wiedmann was 10th. Borgos was 14th, Gengel was 15th, Bartlett was 21st, Caron was 30th, Anna Manzella was 31st, Burns was 35th and Anderson was 36th.

Queensbury finished second in the team standings at the state meet.

The all-stars were selected based on points earned before sectionals.
