Girls Basketball: Amsterdam, Gloversville awarded top-four seeds

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Amsterdam and Gloversville girls basketball teams finished first and second in the Foothills Council South Division standings during the regular season.

Both teams earned top-four seeds for the Section II Class A Tournament and first-round byes.

Amsterdam (16-4 overall), which finished second in Class A last season, earned the No. 2 seed for the second straight season. The Lady Rams will host either seventh-seeded Lansingburgh or 10th-seeded South Glens Falls in the quarterfinals Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Gloversville (12-8 overall) was awarded the No. 4 seed. The Lady Dragons will face either No. 12 seed Bishop Maginn or fifth-seeded Scotia-Glenville in the quarterfinals Feb. 23 at Averill Park at 6 p.m.

Averill Park, which won last year’s Class A title, was seeded first, while Mohonasen earned the third seed.

Fonda-Fultonville and Johnstown will be part of the Class B bracket.

The Lady Braves earned the eighth seed and will host ninth-seeded Voorheesville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a first-round contest. FFCS is 13-7 overall this season. The winner advances to play top-seeded Glens Falls in the quarterfinals Feb. 25 in Glens Falls.

Johnstown (6-13 overall) was awarded the 10th seed. The Lady Bills will travel to seventh-seeded Cobleskill-Richmondville on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest. The winner advances to face either No. 2 seed Tamarac or No. 15 seed Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk in the quarterfinals Feb. 25.

In Class C, Mayfield, Canajoharie and Galway all will be part of the field.

Mayfield (11-9 overall) is slated to host 20th-seeded Granville on Friday at 6 p.m. in a play-in game. The winner advances to face fourth-seeded Warrensburg on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Warrensburg.

Canajoharie (10-10 overall) claimed the 19th seed and will travel to 14th-seeded Chatham on Friday for a 6 p.m. play-in game. The winner advances to face third-seeded Middleburgh in the first round Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Middleburgh.

Galway was awarded the 11th seed and will travel to Lake George on Tuesday to face the sixth-seeded Warriors in a first-round contest at 6 p.m.

Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville and Northville are both part of the Class D bracket.

Northville (5-15), which has won three straight games, earned the 10th seed and will travel to seventh-seeded Fort Edward on Tuesday for a first-round game at 6 p.m. The winner advances to face second-seeded Heatly on Feb. 24 in the quarterfinals.

OESJ (10-10 overall) was awarded the eighth seed. The Lady Wolves will host ninth-seeded Loudonville Christian in a first-round contest Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner advances to face top-seeded North Warren in the quarterfinals Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

In Class AA, Shaker was seeded first, Shenendehowa second, Columbia third and Saratoga Springs fourth.

Broadalbin-Perth (3-17 overall) and Fort Plain (2-17 overall) opted not to compete in the postseason, while Dolgeville (6-14 overall) failed to qualify for the Section III Class C Tournament.
