Another thing: I never understood why people talk about the "taxpayers" and the "teachers" as if they are different entities. Teachers ARE taxpayers.

I know many, many NYSUT members who are disillusioned and disgruntled. And, it's not only teachers; there are subs, bus drivers, nurses, etc. in the union. I don't know how the teachers would go about disbanding NYSUT. It is set up as union shop. You are familiar with that in other union businesses. Anyway, this whole argument is so old--blaming teachers, unions, tenure, Triborough for the ills of the world. Henry Ford has a quote something to the effect of we can all sit around and place blame or be part of the solution. There need to be serious studies as to how to better fund schools. Studies to work on student attendance, behavior, and grades. All the blame and snarking just distracts from finding true answers. I don't know how much anyone has heard about the PTECH school. Schools, BOCES, area businesses, and FMCC will work together to create a model school in which students earn a HS diploma AND a 2 year Associates Degree in 4 years.

The teachers will never clean up the union. Mr. Bob; The union is not useless for the teachers. ONLY the tax payers.

Am I to understand that the teachers union is NOT a union of teachers for teachers but instead a group of people who force teachers, against their will, to be a member of their club and give them money or they cant be a teacher? I wonder who set that racket up, sure as h*ll wasn't the property tax payer. It's past time you teachers clean out your useless 'union'. This is coming from someone who writes the checks you cash.

Property tax relief for a tax paid only by a minority of voters is not a priority for Cuomo. The only way that the discriminatory property/school tax will be relieved is by a lawsuit that goes all the way to the US Supreme Court. Until then the 2% fuzzy math is just another dog and pony show.

Bob & Adk - Most teachers are teachers & not politicians - I believe that their union co-opts them with fear & BS just to retain their votes, get their money, and keep their power.

So, why don't the teachers disband NYSUT and all teacher unions? Do something about it then cry, don't cry first and expect to be taken seriously.

This property tax relief is a re-election year gimmick along with casinos, etc. NYS needs real answers. And, to all the posters who think teachers and NYSUT have created all the problems of the world, you are just going along with what the gov't and corporations want you to think. NYSUT has NO power and has taken dues and sold its members down the road. Also, by drinking the kool aid, it allows the gov't to arrive at no REAL answers for poor school attendance, behavior, and grades. And for people who are still posting about merit pay, teacher are against it. Another gimmick.

There is no place in NYS for Anti-Life, Anti-Freedom, Anti-Traditional marriage extreme Democrats/Progressives/Liberals. Can you imagine if a conservative leader said that on the radio? That might be the only thing that could take Christie off the lead story of every MSNBC show.

To do what your question posed TOT, NYS Legislature is going to have to start eliminating entitlement programs one by one. The taxpayer funded pie is getting smaller regardless of the gimmicks. Cuomo's message to the Country regarding who is and who is not welcome in NYS has put a stake in the heart of his claim NY is 'open for business'. Make no mistake, individual success is a dirty word to these liberal fools in Albany and Washington and just about every City they control and can't help leaving destruction in their wake due to their false ideology of Statism. Cuomo has dropped the gauntlet in NY; either you agree with him or you're not welcome here.
