How about the LH leaving this question up here through March?

Druggy: According to the RC church, the pope is supposed to be infallible on church issues. That being said, let's pretend the pope didn't know about the pedophiles. If he's infallible and knew, then doing nothing was the right thing according to the RC Church. I'm sure a Vatican lawyer will argue that it isn't a matter of doctrine.

Drugs... My road is pretty stable I teach my kids right from wrong! And not to protect your kids while they are young is just absurd....They have learned about all religions and they can make their own choice, if they choose,... protection and coddling are two different things!

I'm not Catholic, but if he feels that eh can no longer do the job, he is right to offer to step down. I had an important job in my church. I had to step down because I couldn't devote the need time to do the job. I wish him the best in his future.

Leaving with grace should be in the Pope's job description.

Men without religion carry out horrific acts too, are they excused? And yeah, it's too bad but if you don't believe in something greater than yourself you'll believe anything. Progressives believe they ARE Santa, thanks for bringing it up.

Yea getreal drugs makes a GREAT point.. Just because you are wary of the thousands of cases of pedofilia against the church you are wrong to protect them against it while they are 5.. When they are 30 and their spouse abuses them they certainly cannot protect themselves.. I see why you call yourself drugs..

getreal, you're in for a long hard road. Are you also going to protect your sons from an abusive spouse ?? There is a lot of that going around too. While "that conversation" was never had in many homes and still today is on a taboo list. Somehow most of us managed to know right from wrong and when something was not right we managed to avoid the situation. It is part of the aging and maturing process, unless you have "helicopter parents" who protect you form everything, leave the training wheels on your bike until you're 14, and a whole list of other things.

Hey Bob so someone who doesn't believe in god will fall for anything? Ummm no.. Quite the opposite.. I also don't believe in unicorns, the tooth fairy and Santa Claus.. History has proven that men of religion will commit horrific acts with regularity.. Luckily religion is on the decline so I'm with getreal..

Re the selection of a new pope, I have removed my name from the list. If drafted, I will not run, if elected, I will not serve.

In Boston our cardinal during the time of pedophile priest was Cardinal Law, who did nothing to stop the abuse-just transfered them from one parish to another. How did the pope reward him, he move him from Boston to the Vatican as special assisstant to-you guessed it-the pope. How many children could he have saved?

I always thought the priest and pope were to take the vow of poverty. The pope himself wears Prada shoes and Roloex watches. Why anyone would take instuctions from someone living in a castle is beyond me. I say in this day and age, get rid of the pope. In medival times I could see the position but now, people are intelligent enough to know right from wrong.

getreal- so you put all priests in the category of pedophiles?? I was raised Roman Catholic too, and while there have been many problems and the church is complicit in this, it is unfortunate that the church has forever failed to realize that man was created with faults. The founding fathers of this country were aware that no man or nothing created by him is perfect. Something tells me that the pedophilia in the church didn't exsist 100 or so years ago. I'm not defending the church, but you tell me how to weed them out early in thier quest for the priesthood. Your comments belie your faith.
To keep on topic the answer is -yes

The question was if he made the right decision in ANNOUNCING his decision. How would you explain his stepping down and not announcing it? Nice question LH. Does anyone edit the editors?

Mr Bob are you sure your not speaking about youself? I beleive in Many things higher than myself its just not the Pope! I was raised Roman Catholic...Cant get passed all the priest who pray on children and the so called Pope who did nothing! Would not let any of my sons step foot in front of a priest! You dont need a church or to follow people like a flock of sheep to have religion! First you need to be a good hearted person!
Everybody, I think, can learn from this. Courage of your convictions is not only for ideological reasoning, its more Spiritual. Combine them and you have 'faith'.

Amen TOT. I believe, drugs, that anyone who does not believe in something greater than themselves will believe anything. It's not an original thought but getreal and scare prove the point.

I believe that when your time is over as far as doing the best job, when you and others agree that it is in everyones best interests to stop then it is time to quit. I am sure that there are many capable replacements and that the best qualified man will get the nod. And drugsrus has it right, let people have their history. The past is significant to the people that believe in honoring the people that worked their lives to try to make the world a better place. I wish that today there were more people with respect for the way things were and the people that worked to achieve their goals.
