There is a way to settle it. Hold the old guard responsible. Fulton and Montgomery counties have had the same families running and controling everything for way too long. They are not interested in whether it works or not as long as they and their friends and family have a piece of the pie. They don't want anything like RT9 they are scared of outsiders b/c they know they corruption is transparent. I ahve heard too many times "we don't need that here". I have seen good small businesses want to move here, but the machine gets a relative to open a sad facsimile and deny the business license. Why are all elections unopposed? How is it the Mayor of Gloversville is a full time walmart employee? think Walmart will make out ok? Wake up.

Also the Baby tax for politicians. Gloversville now acting like babies on the FAGE issue because Johnstown did approve the Wally world connection...OMG!!!!How old are these jokers? lets chase away business and tourism. I bet if Wally world wanted something King would bend over backward for them.

How come they don't charge a "Snoze" tax? That's right, that would be the Board of Stupidvisors and the puppetmaster jonny. Then we can have the free loaders tax subtracted from the handouts at Daisy Lane...Maybe call it the Daisy Lane tax!

There are many things that the county could do to improve tourism. Simple thing is that we need to highlight that we are the gateway to the central Adirondacks. Unfortunately, the county has decided that building a new Wally World is more important than investing in tourism based businesses. Rt. 30 has the potential to become the next Rt. 9 in Lake George, where there are businesses that cater to the tourists, campers and boaters. Unfortunately, it is way too late to do this and with economy not getting any better anytime soon, we are doomed to fail and eventually, the state will get involved, which may be the best option at this point.

How about, we tax every tea bag that anyone ever purchases? How about, we give all our hard earned tax dollars, to a quasi public firm with no oversight?

Definitely they should not tax the rooms. we need to fill the rooms. also I'd like to point out that the taxes we drown in are 80% school district taxes. Most of the revenue collected is going to school budgets. County and state are a very small portion. Look at your tax bill. Fulton and Montgomery need to find an identity and "sell" it. And discourage the welfare folks from coming here.

We are already drawing people here by 'differentiating' oursleves into a welfare county. Unfortunately, they are the wrong people and come for the wrong reasons. I suspect we get more winter sports people and summer history buffs here than is counted because they mostly come as individuals, not groups. What can be done to bring more? The Chamber seems to be trying at least.

I wouldn't be too concerned about a bed tax decreasing the little tourism that we have. Most staying at our inns are here for business purposes or events such as deaths, weddings, graduations etc... sadly we do not have much to differentiate Fulton County from other areas. We have lakes, and mountains, but so does much of upstate NY, VT, NH, Me, and many others. We are full of History but I see sights such as the one on William St and Montgomery St in J'town deteriorating. Also I believe that our youth is less interested in history and the outdoors. They are more interested in technology and social networking. The big question is How can Fulton County Differentiate ourselves to draw people here??

Another good idea to keep people from coming here. Whats the matter, we dont tax the people that live and shop here enough? we have to come up with new ways to get into the pockets out of towners too?

The well known message is, get a state job, become a chief of some little out of the way department & cruise thru life. How do you combat that what it's exactly what goes on?

Taxedtoomuch you are sooo correct, however those people who have received their jobs through those means never are the ones to lose anything... when they restructure or layoff it is always the indians never the chiefs. They just find sum other place to put the useless ones and turn around an say they fixed the problem ( thats what they just did with all the looming layoffs for state workers)

Government is bloated and full of people who have been given jobs as favors as results of campaign assistance or contributions. Smart spending and a restructuring to run efficiently would be ideal.

Hillary Clinton says we need to tax everything that moves or doesn't move. But I still would rather they spend wisely instead of bilking more money form anyone!

Let’s see, the county raises all this money from the bed tax and they do what with it? Option 1-use it for highway patrols and local education or, option 2- turn it over to the state for mandated DSS programs. If the bed taxes aren’t enough; the county will raise the property taxes, again for the state. How about clearing of the table and putting DSS front and center on the chopping block. I bet just the sound of that sends shivers down the backs of liberals.

Many tourist areas have bed taxes and as a result they also have low or no income taxes. Unfortunately our tourist industry is not the strongest, but it can't hurt. Any additional revenue that offsets property taxes and income taxes is welcome. I have never once failed to stay at a place because of a "bed Tax".

I few of you should get out a little more. Bed taxes are everywhere. And travelers pay little attention to it. Has anyone said, I would love to go Aunt Wilma's funeral, but that darn bed tax... or I would love to take my kids on vacation, but that darn bed tax. Read the following and be informed.... I don't like taxes anymore than anyone else, but this tax will not change anything except bring in more revenue.

I'm not in favor of more taxes any more than the rest of you, but at least let's soak the outsiders for once. Tourists won't even notice it. When tourists end up somewhere at the end of a day's travel, most pick the cheapest local motel that doesn't look evil and go to sleep without analysing the bill. If they can't afford it, they should stay home and probably do. But we should keep it a bit lower that Monty Co's tax. We want visitors staying in OUR motels, not their's.

So after your stay at a hotel in Johnstown or the outlying areas (as we in G'ville do not have any lodging that I know of. other than the Y's) and you see that they added an unexpected charge to your bill, you wouldn't look into other arrangements next time through? Adding taxes isn't the answer to our overspending. Mandate relief however could go a long way towards fiscal prosperity!
