Ask Marilyn: Help! My Mom Is Always Putting Me Down

B.D. in Detroit, Michigan, writes:

Marilyn: My mom is always putting me down. I think it's because I look like my dad, and she hates him. It's always worse after I visit him. Plus, we're both smart, and she isn't. But she's nice when she isn't complaining about my friends. My dad likes my friends. He wants me to go live with him. I'm 13 now, old enough to decide, but I'm scared to make the change. I don't want my mom to hate me. Also, my dad is more like a friend than a parent. Do you have any advice?

Marilyn responds:

Yes, stay with your mom, get some better friends, and don't take them to visit your dad. And when you get back from a visit, don't talk about it unless your mom asks, and even then, try not to say much.
