Stray bullet grazes suburban New York hotel guest

August 25, 2014
Associated Press

RYE BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a suburban New York hotel guest's gun accidentally went off and sent a bullet through a wall, grazing a guest in an adjoining room. No one was seriously injured.

It happened Saturday afternoon at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook. Police Chief Gregory Austin said Monday that a guest had packed a handgun in his suitcase and was moving the weapon to a dresser when it fired.

Austin says the wall and furnishings slowed the bullet before it hit the guest next door. It didn't break his skin.

Austin says gun owner Jason Fleming had a proper permit. He's been charged with reckless endangerment and is free on $1,000 bond.

The 31-year-old from Lockport declined to comment Monday.

Hilton managers haven't immediately returned a call.
